What is OPSA?

OPSA stands for Overseas Plastic Surgery Appeal – a registered charity (Registered Charity No: 1116561) that provides free surgical procedures to poor children and young adults. We operate to correct facial abnormalities including cleft lip and palate.

Our work transforms lives. It truly gives young people a face they can live with, enabling them to learn to speak properly, to go to school and to become useful members of their society. Without our help, these children are consigned to ill health and a social ostracism.

Often a relatively simple operation is all that is needed to give a child a face they can live with.

All the members of the medical team working with OPSA give their time free and no money is spent on administrative costs; it is all done by volunteers.

This means that every penny of every donation we receive goes directly towards our next trip and to changing children’s lives forever. Your donations really do make a difference.

Thank you

Nick Hart - OPSA Chairman

Help us on our mission

OPSA started its life in 1998 after Mr Nick Hart travelled to Pakistan and was involved in some operations with a hospital in Gujrat, Pakistan. Nick could see how great the need was for his expertise that he returned to the UK and set up OPSA.

Children with facial abnormalities and unrepaired clefts live in shame but, more importantly, have difficulty eating, breathing and speaking. the work OPSA does, changes childrens lives, restoring smiles every mission.

To date, the teams have operated on more than 3000 patients. Approximately 100 to 150 patients receive surgery at each camp of 7 days duration.

meet our Trustees & Medical team

In 1998, a plastic surgeon visiting Hull suggested that a small team fly out to help operate on children in Pakistan with facial abnormalities. The visit was a great success and since then teams have continued to return to Pakistan to operate.

For the last seven years, we have visited Gujrat in Pakistan twice a year. On each visit we have operated on more than 120 children and adults in just seven days. In 2010 we also visited Kerala in India to set up a surgery camp and plan to visit again soon.

OPSA has grown over the years and word of mouth has created a larger demand for our services. Families bring their children from all over Pakistan to the hospital, knowing that they would not be able to afford this life-changing surgery for their children were it not for the free medical care that OPSA provides. Because of the need, we now visit Pakistan twice a year.

Our work is so important to the people who have these disfigurements but, of course, what we do relies on raising funds for each trip. Every donation makes our trips more and more possible and we are grateful for every penny we receive.

There are many ways in which you can help us in our mission and every penny counts

Ways you can help

Everyone involved in OPSA works as an unpaid volunteer. That’s why your support is fundamental to our work. We aim to secure corporate sponsorship for many of our costs but we still need to pay for many different things including work visas, local transport costs and medical equipment.

We are always looking for help, whether through a single donation, regular donation, volunteering, attending an event or simply subscribing and helping us spread our message on social networks. Whatever it is, we are eternally grateful.

Donate

Donating is easy. We can accept donations from all major credit and debit cards. You can choose to make a single one-off donation or a regular amount: the choice is yours. We can also accept small £10 donations via SMS.

Remember: every penny counts and matters more than you know. Every penny is spent on medical care; no money is spent on the administration of OPSA to provide free facial, cleft and palate care for poor children. We also provide speech therapy after surgery.

Become a medical volunteer

We focus on partnering with local surgeons, theatre staff and medical professionals in Pakistan to life-changing, free surgery for babies and children.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, get in touch with us below.

Arrange a fundraising Event

Why not choose OPSA and arrange a charity fundraising event?

Gather friends, family and colleagues to host a special event for OPSA. Whether it's for your birthday, your class, your social group, or because you simply want to help any way you can, use your imagination and get ready to have fun helping improve children's lives forever.

If you have a story to tell us about your donation or fundraising event, please let us know as we would love to feature you on our website!

Help Spread the word

One of our biggest challenges is reaching the people who want to help, so getting our message across is vitally important.

This is where you can help, for free: simply share, post, tweet, blog and chat about us and the invaluable work we do for children in desperate need of help.

Donate gifts and prizes

We are always looking for some unusual donations/ prizes that we can auction or sell at our fundraising events throughout the year.

We need some really generous ones: an item of jewellery, a weekend away, a trip abroad, a meal at a restaurant etc. – anything that you think would auction or be good in a  top class raffle.

We also need the usual bottles of wine and chocolates for smaller events.

Thank you for all your help!
